ThisisRoyDowellssecondexhibitionatLennonWeinberg.Itisstrikinglydierentromhisrsthereouryearsagoinwhichlongrowsoramedcollagesringedthegallery.Thecurrentexhi-bitionincludeseightpaintingsandvesculpturesthatassertanattitudeaboutDowellsoundationalpracticeocollageassurelyasitheyhadbeenmaderomhisusualrepertoireoprintedandhand-drawnsectionsopaper.RoyDowellisaprodigiousgathereroreerencesandresources.Hehasamagpieseyeorthevisualpropertiesothingsthathegen-erouslyintroducesintohiswork.Iconsoearlyandmid-centurymodernismsuchasGeorgesBraqueKurtSchwittersandStuartDavisareairgamealongwithMexicanandLatinAmericanpot-teryandtextilesethnographicmaterialromAricaandIndiaprintedbillboardsandpaintedsignage.Hishomeandhisstudioarelledwithcollectionsoritualandvernacularobjectsthatclearlyinormhissenseocolorpatternandcomposition.AskedrecentlywhatisthemostindispensableiteminhisstudioDowellrepliedIwouldsaythattheobjectthathangsabovemydeskanaxehandlewithapaintedsoccerballattachedtoitisthemostindispensableobjectinmystudio.IboughtitinMexicomanyyearsagoanditconstantlyremindsmeowhataperectobjectshouldlooklike.Thisoddbutpowerulobjectisclearlytheinspirationoroneotheworksinourexhibitionthewall-mountedsculptureUntitled1030afatdiskpaintedwithapat-ternohexagonsjoinedtoapole-likehandle.DowellwasincludedintheinauguralMadeinL.A.biennial
exhibitionattheHammerMuseumatUCLAin2012representedbyaselectionofpaintedsculptures.Longrecognizedforhispaintingsandcollagesthesculpturescameassomethingofasurprise.ChristopherKnightoftheLosAngelesTimeswrotethisabouttheminhisreviewoftheshowVividmodernabstractionderivedfromhighartandpopulardesignisfusedwithfunctionalformssuggestiveoftribalobjectsheadreststoolmaskshieldandmore.Artanditsritualsofdisplayarebracinglyunveiledasacelebratorybranchofglobalethnology.ThesculpturesinourcurrentshowevokeasimilarrangeofreferencewiththeadditionofacartoonyumbrellathatispositivelyGuston-esque.Thegenerallymedium-sizedpaintingssharealooselybilateralsymmetrywiththesculptures.Paintedwithacryliconlinentheyshowaskilledandrelaxedhandatwork.Thepaintingsarepre-cisebutnottightwithanengagingspatialplaybetweenopaqueareasandtransparentones.Shapescanbewobblybutthegeome-tryofgridsstripescirclesandserratedrowsoftrianglesachievesapoisedresolution.ThehandmadequalityofallofDowellsworksthepaintingssculpturesandcollagesbothanimatesthemandcorroboratestheirrelationshipwiththediversesourcematerialsthatinspirehim.JillWeinbergAdams

RoyDowellwasborninBronxvilleNewYorkin1951.Hisam-ilymovedregularlybeoresettlinginCaliorniawhenRoywasourteen.HebegantovisitthePasadenaArtMuseumandpar-ticularlyremembersseeingaJosephCornellexhibitionthere.HeattendedtheCaliorniaCollegeoArtsandCratsinOaklandrom1969to1971thentranserredtoCalArtsinValenciaCali-ornia.DowellstudiedwithEmersonWoelerwhoprovidedadirectlinktothemodernisttraditionbutalsowithAllanKaprowapioneerinthefeldoperormanceart.HecontinuedontothegraduateprogramitwasthenhesaysthatIbeganedgingintopaintingthroughthebackdoor.Hegraduatedin1975.In1979heoundedthefneartsgraduateprogramatOtisCollegeoArtandDesigninLosAngelesandstillservesaschairothedepartment.InLosAngelesDowellshowedwithRosamundFelsenrom1986to1994andwithMargoLeavinrom1995to2012.InNewYorkhehadexhibitionswithbothJoeFawbushandCurtMar-cus.HisfrstshowwithLennonWeinbergwasin2010.RecentlyheshowedworksatGaleraNinaMenocalinMexicoCityVari-ousSmallFiresinVeniceCaliorniaandJamesHarrisGalleryinSeattle.Hisworkwaseaturedinthe2012MadeinL.A.biennialattheHammerMuseum.HisworkisincludedinmuseumcollectionssuchastheLosAnge-lesCountyMuseumoArtandtheMuseumoContemporaryArtinLosAngelesaswellastheHammerMuseumSanFran-ciscoMuseumoModernArtMuseumoContemporaryArtSanDiegoTheBerkeleyMuseumoArtTheOaklandMusuemTheJumexCollectiontheEliBroadCollectionandmanyothersig-nifcantinstitutionalandprivatecollections.HelivesandworksinLosAngelesandSanMigueldeAllendeMexico.
