MeMentoMoriAesopistheearliestothepaintingsinthisexhibitionandisthemostcloselyrelatedtothepriorcycleoworktitledTracesofAbsencethatwaspresentedinCarlPalazzolossoloexhibitionatTexasGalleryinHoustonseveralyearsago.Eachpaintinginthatserieseaturedanobjectthatservedtoanchoralayeredcompositionosubtlymodulatedcoloredeldsreehandbrushstrokesandascatterorosepetalsandnumbersacrossthesurace.Detlycombiningaspectsocolor-eldpaintinggesturalabstractionrealismandsymbolismhesetthestageorthepaintedobjectsalightbulbalengthoropeaoldedstripedshirtapairomarblestoplaytheroleomementomori.CarltoldmethatAesopcompletedbeoreheconceivedthetitlemadehimthinkolanguageandstorytellingandthattheobjectinthiscaseayardstickpaintedtoscalelookedlikeananimatecluetoreadingthepaintingsnarrative.Thepetalsarepairedwithnumbersthatliketheyardstickadvanceromonetothirty-sixandareareadilylegiblemetaphororthepassageoourfeetingmeasureotime.Carlspaintingsdevelopslowlyashebuildsandrenesthelayersandthispaintingwasstillontheeaselinthespringo2011whenhelearnedthathiscloseriendoortyyearspainterStephenMuellerhadbeendiagnosedwithcancer.AesopwasunnishedwhenCarlbeganworkonDachandOperaforJ.S..Thethreepaintingsshareavine-liketangleobandedlinethathadrstappearedinwatercolorsmadeduring
oneothevisitsthatCarlandStephenmadeeachyeartotheSpoletoFestivalinCharlestonSouthCarolina.TheywouldstayatthehomeotheirgenerousriendsandcollectorsDavidandCarolRawleandmakewatercolorsbyalovelygarden.HoweverthatyearCarlmadethetripaloneasStephenwasnotwellenoughtotravel.CarlhasdescribedthecentralthemesohisworkasmemoryandlossimpermanenceandanundercurrentolonginganddesiretheprogressionoStephensillnessmadehissenseotheseeelingsallthemoreimmediate.StephendiedinSeptember2011andtherestothepaintingsinthisexhibitionareaparticularlyspecifcandpersonalexpressionohomageappreciationandloveromoneriendandpaintertowardsanother.CarlaskedihemighthavethecanvasdropclothsromStephensstudiothatborethetracesohismaterialsandprocess.Bothpainterssharedaoundationintheoreticalcolor-feldabstractionestablishedduringtheirormaltrainingattheMuseumSchoolinBostonandBenningtonCollegerespectivelywhichservedbothothemwellevenastheyreactedagainstitsconstraints.AndsoitisappropriatethatthesestainedlengthsocanvasspottedandspatteredwiththeresidueoStephensacrylicpaintbecametheactualgroundsortheseriesofvepaintingstitledTearsofThings.InthesepaintingsCarlexchangedthemetaphoricentitiesosymbolicobjectsorelementsthatquoteromStephensownpaintings.Hestretchedsectionsothedropclothsaddedlayersocolortintedrosepetalsandnumbersandintroducedhard-edgedshapesingraduatedcolorsthatechoStephensvocabularyoroundedorms.Theactopaintingonhisriendsdropclothsmusthaveeltbothsolemnandcelebratoryanditissointimatetohaveexposedinthese
paintingssuchprivateeelingsomourningandloss.ForapainterwhodecadesearliercreatedacycleoworksthatdeconstructedtheelegantlydispassionateJohnSingerSargentportraitTheDaughtersofEdwardBoittheTearsofThingsseriesisaseloquentastatementotheunderlyingthemesinCarlsworkashehaseverproduced.Thesearebeautiulpaintingsormallytechnicallyandemotionally.Thentherearetheragrances.ThoseouswhoknewStephenhaveanindeliblememoryothemingledaromasoincensetobaccoandscentthatperumedhisstudioandhisperson.Carlhasmadeaseriesoninepaintingsinatwelve-by-twelveinchormatthatbothheandStephenusedonandofovertheyears.Eachdepictsthebottleoaparticularbrandoragranceeachrepresentingamemoryowhereitwaspurchasedandwhyitwaschosenwhenitwaswornandwithwhomitwasshared.Thesepaintingsarepersonalinthenestandmostmeaningulway.CarlPalazzolohasbeenanintegralpartotheLennonWeinberggalleryoralloourtwenty-veyears.Includingthisonewehavepresentedsixsoloexhibitionsohiswork.Allhavebeenriewithreerencesthatgobeyondthepersonalanddemonstratehisintelligenceandwitaswellasastancethatvaluessincerityoverirony.Theverylongevityoourrelationshipdeepensmyunderstandingothehumanitythathasshapedthisspecialbodyowork.JillWeinbergAdamsMarch2013
